EDItX XML Document Formats

EDItX XML Document Formats were developed jointly by BISG, BIC and EDItEUR. They are meant to mirror and extend the functionality of existing X12, TRADACOMS and EDIFACT messages for the book trade and library sectors.

In each case, the Outline Specification is recommended as an introduction to the format and the functionality which it supports. The XML Schema contains text files which together constitute a formal definition allowing standard XML software to parse, verify and operate on the content of correctly formulated EDItX messages.

Sales and Tax Reports

Published June 2011 | Revised February 2012
Working closely with EDItEUR, BISG has developed both XML and flat file (Excel) formats versions of EDItEUR's new EDItX Sales and Tax Report, version 1.1, which are designed to meet North American book trade requirements. The BISG Sales and Tax Reports are intended to be used by a retailer, distributor or other intermediary, or by an agent reporting on their behalf, to report sales and sales tax to a publisher or content owner.

Such sales reports are the basis on which payments are made to the publisher, either by the seller or, if the seller is a branch of a larger organization that purchases centrally, by the central "buyer." The reports are suitable for use with both agency and wholesale models, and in both digital and non-digital book product supply chains.

Inventory Reporting

Last Updated July 2009
The EDItX Inventory Report format is intended to be used by a retailer, distributor or other intermediary managing inventory (on consignment or otherwise) on behalf of the publisher or content owner, or by an agent reporting on their behalf, to report inventory levels to the publisher.
Inventory reports may be used to report inventory levels and movements in those markets where various forms of inventory management are practiced.
The format has been derived from the EDItX Sales Report format 1.0. It is intended that the format be implemented in digital (on a physical carrier such as a CD, or online if the seller has been allocated a finite number of licenses to sell), non-digital or mixed book product supply chains, depending upon local market requirements.

Trade Book Supply Transactions

Last Updated May 2010
These EDItX formats are intended for general book trade use, covering transactions between retailers, wholesalers and publishers where ordered items are supplied to, and for resale by, the trade customer responsible for sending the order.

Each transaction has its own individual XML schema file, but all share a single code list file. This will enable new issues of the code lists to be made without a new version of the schemas that use them.

Library Supply Transactions

Last Updated June 2008
This EDItX document is the first of a family of formats for library supply, covering transactions between library booksellers and libraries.

Each transaction has its own individual XML schema file, but all share a single code list file. This will enable new issues of the code lists to be made without a new version of the schemas that use them.

Consumer Direct Fulfillment (CDF)

Last Updated June 2008
This EDItX document is the first of a family of formats for consumer direct fulfillment (CDF), covering transactions between (typically) Internet booksellers and wholesalers, where the wholesaler delivers direct to the consumer who placed an order with the bookseller.

Each transaction has its own individual XML schema file, but all share a single code list file. This will enable new issues of the code lists to be made without a new version of the schemas that use them.
