Barcoding Books 3: Create Your Barcode

|
 |
How do I get my barcode created?
There are two ways to create the barcode and add it to your publication. The barcode can be created prior to publication by incorporating with your other artwork or the barcode can be printed on labels and applied to the publication if production is already complete. In either case, special consideration should be made when producing the barcode to insure scanning accuracy when complete. A reputable barcode supplier will be able to help you with this process and explain the advantages and disadvantages to each method.

Can I create my own barcodes?
Yes. Barcode generation software is available to create your own EAN codes. But beware! There are many things to consider when creating your own barcodes. Low cost software programs may allow you to instantly create barcodes with the incorrect specifications, size or printing tolerances. To avoid costly mistakes and barcodes that will not scan, you should select professional software from a reputable supplier. Additionally, the software must include the ability to offer bar width reduction for both pre-press and post-press accuracy. Typically, the lower cost "font" programs do not offer this feature. When creating barcodes, quality verification is also extremely important. Most retailers require a barcode quality ANSI grade of C or higher for the barcodes printed or placed on products. A barcode verifier should be used to insure the accuracy (ANSI C) of your pre-press (film master/EPS file) or post press (labels) codes.
