Machine Readable Coding (MRC)

The BISAC Machine Readable Coding (MRC) Committee main focus is on drafting a BISG recommended list of products for which ISBNs are appropriate and a list of products which should not carry ISBNs. This effort will minimize the breaking of new ground and will base its work on recommendations already made by the International ISBN Agency and by GS1.

In addition, the MRC Committee was asked by the General BISAC Committee to consider whether some recommendation can be made for minimum bar code size (and dimensions), given the numerous departures from the minimum size recommended by GS1 US observed on books.

The MRC Committee does not duplicate work on issues being addressed by the EAN Transition Task Force or by the ISBN-13 Task Force, although many of the topics currently discussed by these groups originally arose through MRC work.
