Policies
BISG Policies are designed to address
and advise on critical industry concerns. Policies are drafted and revised by
BISG and BISAC committees and presented to BISG membership for feedback. After feedback is
reviewed and incorporated as appropriate, policies are sent to the
BISG Board of Directors for final review and
endorsement.

BISG Policy Statement POL-0701: Elimination
of Dual IDs on Books & Related Products
Approved and Published March 15, 2007
This Statement provides guidance on the
elimination of dual identifiers (two or more
identifiers for a product and two or more bar
codes on the physical product). Recommendations
as as to which identifier -- ISBN or U.P.C. --
should be assigned to specific products is
included.
Some of the organizations which have indicated
support of the Statement POL-0701 include the
U.S. ISBN Agency, GS1
US, the Association of American Publishers
(AAP), the American Bookseller Association
(ABA), the Evangelical Christian Publishers
Association (ECPA), PMA, the Independent Book
Publishers Association, the Association for
Christian Retail (CBA), and Map Link.

for adopting the changes to the ISBN in Electronic Data
Interchange (EDI).

privacy norms that are intended to include both
RFID and all current practices to ensure safe
and secure data transfer, such as in the use of
electronic transactions.

This Statement outlines BISG's stance in regard
to 2005 Sunrise, the transition to the 13-digit
ISBN, and the use of the GTIN.
