Although there was some impact on publishers related to 2005 Sunrise, most of the work to become compliant
fell on general retailers. Since many grocery and mass-market
retailers still rely heavily on the 12-digit U.P.C.,
publishers that sell into those channels are finding it
necessary to print dual runs--one with the 12-digit U.P.C. on Cover 4 and another with the EAN-13--and/or
sticker EAN-13 bar coded items with the 12-digit U.P.C.
for those markets that are not yet compliant.
Affected Internal
Systems
The internal publisher systems most likely affected by
the U.P.C. to EAN transition include:
-
Title records and related data-bases
-
Invoices
-
Order processing
-
Receiving
-
Returns processing
-
Order fulfillment
-
Registration agency transactions – BIP, CIP, etc.
-
Accounting – royalty tracking
-
Catalogs (both print and electronic)
-
Screens
-
Reports
-
Forms exchanged with trading partners
-
Electronic formats exchanged with trading partners
Furthermore, BISG recommends that when retailers upgrade their systems to become
EAN-13 bar code
compliant, they take the extra step of expanding their
database to allow for 14-digit bar code compliance as
well. This additional change will allow the
identification of the entire family of GTIN bar codes
and bring your company in line with RFID and global data
synchronization requirements.
