The Year in Review:
2008-2009

Michael Healy
Executive Director, BISG

For all of us involved in the U.S. book industry the past year proved difficult as the influence of the global recession was, and continues to be, felt keenly. In light of these circumstances, in 2008-2009 BISG rightly focused its attention in those areas where the application of standards and best practices could help drive down the cost of doing business. During this session, BISG Executive Director, Michael Healy, reviews the highlights.

Includes presentation and approval of audited financial statements
and election of Class 2 Directors.

BISG in 2010:
A Strategic Vision for the Year Ahead

Dominique Raccah
Co-Chair, BISG Board of Directors

Founder, Sourcebooks, Inc.
With a mandate from the BISG Board, the BISG Executive Committee met in July 2009 to review the organization's Strategic Plan for the years 2006-2008. During this meeting there was overwhelming consensus that the BISG Mission Statement, with its focus on the supply chain, continues to express the correct focus for the organization. However, it was also agreed that the Mission Statement should be restated slightly to clarify an important development in which BISG is actively committed: the term "supply chain" now includes both the physical supply chain and the digital supply chain. This change to the Mission Statement was ratified by the Board in August 2009.

And this is just the beginning, over the next 12 months BISG will progress through several key changes. Not only will a new Executive Director take the reins, the office has received a strong mandate to develop new programs and services with new partners and/or members. During this presentation, BISG members will be given a peek into what's in store.

Is the ISBN Dead?
Exploring the Emergent Identifiers Landscape

Mark Bide
Executive Director, EDItEUR

The book industry has had the ISBN for nearly 40 years; there has been little cause for excitement. Now, suddenly the whole subject of "identifiers" has become a hot topic, particularly when it comes to digital books and other online resources. In an August 4th PersonaNonData blog post Michael Cairns even went so far as to write, "The ISBN is Dead. . . .As a community, we need to recognize that the ISBN may not be meeting its intended market need and that the future may make this deficiency even more stark."

During this presentation, an abbreviation of what will be discussed during a more in-depth BISG Webcast sponsored by the U.S. ISBN Agency on September 15th, Mark Bide explores why the book industry has standard identifiers, and considers the future of the ISBN, as well as the role of newer identification standards like ISTC and ISNI. Different users have different functional requirements -- so may have different views of the necessary granularity. What do you need to know to make informed decisions about how -- and whether -- to use these identifiers? Join us to find out!

What are QR Codes?
A Marketing Case Study

Carolyn Pittis
SVP, Global Marketing Strategy and Operations, HarperCollins
2-D barcoding technologies in the form of QR Codes have reached the North American market, enabling print publications to participate directly in interactive consumer engagement. How might publishers use this technology to accelerate relevant marketing for mobile-equipped readers? HarperCollins has begun experimenting with these codes, and with mobile websites, as a way to reach both new and frequent readers. During this presentation, Carolyn Pittis, Senior Vice President for Global Marketing Strategy & Operations for HarperCollins will explain how.
The Book Rights Registry: It's About the Data
Michael Healy
Executive Director, BISG

Executive Director (designate), Book Rights Registry
The Google Book Settlement, if approved, will be administered by a new non-profit organization, controlled by authors and publishers, called The Book Rights Registry. The success of the new body will depend to a great extent on how well it manages a vast corpus of complex and volatile metadata about books, rights and their owners.

Michael Healy, currently BISG's Executive Director, is set to lead the Book Rights Registry and in this short 15-minute presentation will describe the data challenges ahead and the role standards can play when facing them.

The Future of Reading:
How Digital Media is Shaping the Way We Interact with Text

Brad Inman
CEO, Vook
In this presentation, Brad Inman will explain how the landscape of publishing is changing; how digital books are on the rise -- both in terms of the supply and demand.

In order to exemplify how these changes are translating into new business opportunities, Brad will showcase three companies, each of which have found innovative solutions using multimedia and internet technologies to enhance the consumer's experience of content. Finally, he will show how innovation has shaped a new startup called Vook, a service that lets readers read a book, explore media related to it, watch videos that can highlight key story moments or give a better understanding of the text.
Google Editions:
Negotiating the Cloud Publishing Platform

Tom Turvey
Director, Strategic Partnerships, Google
During this year's BEA, Google announced its digital content selling strategy: Google Editions. With Google Editions, consumers can buy access to content from anywhere, anytime and read the content anywhere, in a device-agnostic way.

How does Google Editions work and what does it mean for the eBook market? During this presentation, Tom Turvey, Google's Director of Strategic Partnerships will walk us through the issues.
