presentation description:
Since 2003, when RFID first came to the collective attention of BISG and the book industry, the focus has been on the evolution of a technology rather than the development of a business case. This was a mistake.

When we talk about cruising through a highway toll gate, we don't think RFID: we think "EZ-Pass." It's now time to apply the same "frame" to the use of RFID in the far-flung network of publishing's new supply and demand. For example, this BISG Webcast focused on the RFID business opportunities of:

  • "EZ-returns"
  • "EZ-books on the shelf when the customer is looking for them"
  • "EZ-warehouse management"
  • "EZ-consumer satisfaction"

In addition to the business case, however, it's also important to understand the identification issues as the industry moves beyond barcodes and ISBN to a technology that identifies each individual book, in real time, automatically.

Three speakers were assembled to address these issues. Jim Lichtenberg, member of BISG's Board of Directors and head of its RFID Interest Group since 2003, led the discussion of business opportunities, citing progress within companies currently using the technology. Following this, Michele Southall, Director of Community Development at GS1 US, and Patrick Javick, Director of Industry Development, GS1 US / EPCglobal US, provided a brief description of how interested companies can gain access to this fascinating new approach to product identification.
