BISG's 2010 Annual Meeting of Members hosted professionals from across the industry in a discussion of emerging trends and exciting new opportunities.

AGENDA | SPONSORS | LOCATION | REGISTRANTS | ANNUAL REPORT

AGENDA:

BISG's 2010 Annual Meeting of Members explored how new media and technology are shaping how the book industry redefines and reconnects with consumers to tell stories in ways that could not be told otherwise. In today's brave new publishing world, the sky's the limit with regard to "the next big thing." Consumer perception about how book content can, should and will be purchased, accessed, used and shared is changing.

To respond, forward-thinking companies need to build products, services and marketing campaigns that are sophisticated, creative, and -- above all -- consumer-focused. Not tomorrow: today.

Keeping Up with the Consumer
The need to monitor and trend book consumer behavior in the rapidly changing book industry is essential to understanding where and at what pace the future is headed. During this brief 15-minute presentation, Kelly Gallagher of RR Bowker's PubTrack Consumer presented up-to-the-minute consumer data detailing the "what, when, where, why and how" of book consumer behavior. He also shared practical guidance on how companies can use the data to help refine current strategies.

Kate Wilson
Founder, Nosy Crow
"It's publishing, Jim, but not as we know it."
Historically, scale and history have been sources of publishing power. Will this be true in a digital and global market, in which we should all be asking, "What's a publisher for?" Kate Wilson looked at how the strengths of traditional publishing may become its burdens.

David Jolliffe
Vice President, Cross Media Publishing Services at Pearson Canada
The Next Chapter in Educational Publishing
Beyond traditional textbooks, teacher guides and bookstores, today's educational publisher is experimenting with fresh products and services made possible by exciting new technologies. For example, we're now seeing print-on-demand databases, integrated learning systems, mobile study aids, user-driven Web 2.0 resources, media-rich e-books, interactive classroom presentations, and content for clickers. During this presentation, David Jolliffe from Pearson Canada described how K20 publishers are embracing technology in order to personalize content and redefine their relationship with customers.
