Agenda

BISG's 2011 Annual Meeting of Members explored ways in which the industry is coming together to create opportunities for, and remove barriers to, book buying and consumption. New technologies and new business models are creating innovative opportunities for reaching consumers. The rush to embrace these technologies, however, has created a marketplace that seems, at times, both overwhelming and fractured.

BISG's 2011 Annual Meeting of Members highlighted initiatives that are making sense of systems, data and processes to help all stakeholders better connect books -- be they physical or digital -- to consumers.

The Size and Shape of U.S. Publishing

Industry Sales Rose 3.1% in 2010

DOWNLOAD PRESENTATION

BookStats, one of the most comprehensive statistical survey of the modern U.S. publishing industry -- capturing its size, scope, revenue and rapid strategic expansion across multiplatform content and sales distribution channels -- was released in August 2011.

Spanning 2008-2010, BookStats offers data and analysis of the total industry and the individual Trade, K-12 School, Higher Education, Professional and Scholarly markets. Produced jointly by the Association of American Publishers (AAP) and the Book Industry Study Group (BISG), its highlights include:
  • Overall U.S. publishing revenues are growing
  • Overall U.S. publishing unit sales are up as well
  • Americans, young and old, are reading actively in all print and digital formats
  • Education publishing holds steady and, in some segments, shows solid growth
  • Professional and Scholarly publishing shows gains

During this presentation, Kelly Gallagher, a key member of the BookStats management team, provided a brief look into how BookStats was developed and what trends were discovered.

The pilot project objectives are:
  • Test market sensitivity to price point of enhanced EPUB3 features
  • Determine consumer perceived value of EPUB3 enhancements
  • Evaluate new EPUB3 technologies from a customer viewpoint
  • Prioritize investment in emerging and future EPUB3 technologies
  • Document best practices for developing products with these enhancements

During this presentation, Brett Sandusky, Director of Product Innovation at Kaplan Publishing, and Jeff Olson, Vice President of Research at Kaplan Test Prep, provided an update on pilot program progress to date.

The Identification of Digital Content

DOWNLOAD PRESENTATION

In the spring of 2010, BISG's Identification Committee created a Working Group to research and gather data around the practice of assigning identifiers to digital content throughout the US supply chain. The specific mandate of the Working Group was to gather a true picture of how the US book supply chain was handling ISBN assignments, and then formulate best practice recommendations based on this pragmatic, research-based understanding.

Following several months of research and meetings, Phil Madans, Chair of BISG's Identification of E-Books Working Group, debuted highlights from a forthcoming BISG Policy Statement to be titled Best Practice Recommendations for Identifying Digital Content.

An Update on Rights

DOWNLOAD PRESENTATION

The digital transformation of the publishing industry has created the need for more efficient management of intellectual property rights, and for a common language in which to conduct rights transactions. The all-too-common transmission of rights information in the form of non-standard documents and the resulting costly human data entry and error needs addressing.

In addition, there are developing business opportunities in digital licensing that would benefit from a system-to-system form of communication for transacting rights at scale.

To address these issues, BISG's Rights Committee is developing a Controlled Rights Vocabulary to provide a standardized way for the industry to express rights transactions, and developing standardized messaging to facilitate the system-to-system communication of rights information. During this session, Emily Williams of Publishers Marketplace and Ginger Clark of the Curtis Brown Agency described BISG's current rights initiatives and what they could mean for the industry.

Steve Paxhia
President, Beacon Hill Strategic Solutions

Latest E-Book Consumer and College Student Buying Trends

DOWNLOAD PRESENTATION

The past fiscal year was an exciting time for research at BISG. In addition to publishing the second volume of Consumer Attitudes Toward E-Book Reading, BISG also launched an all new report entitled Student Attitudes Toward Content in Higher Education.

Geoffrey Moore's business classic Crossing the Chasm defines five categories of consumers who drive the adoption of disruptive technologies: innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority, and laggards. Moore suggests that the most difficult step is making the transition between the visionary early adopters and the more pragmatic early majority.

During this presentation, Steve Paxhia of Beacon Hill Strategic Solutions described data indicating that the chasm between early adopters and early majority has been crossed with respect to digital reading devices and textbooks. Along the way, he examined both student and general consumer e-book buying behaviors and preferences.
