The role of traditional print books as the chief means of accessing content is changing, along with the traditional publishing model. With much of the book industry hard at work developing and implementing digital strategies, knowing what is moving consumers to transition to digital is essential to a sound strategy. What factors shape their attitudes toward digital content and purchasing decisions?

During this session, Kelly Gallagher (Bowker's PubTrack Consumer) and Angela Bole (BISG) shared new data from the Book Industry Study Group's on-going research projects: Consumer Attitudes Toward E-Book Reading and Student Attitudes Toward Content in Higher Education. Along the way, they examined, for the first time in a single presentation, both student and general consumer e-book buying behaviors and preferences. The session also provided insight into where the e-book market is heading.

The Association of American Publishers (AAP) and the Book Industry Study Group (BISG) looked at data from BookStats: a new statistics report that provides a clean line of sight into the actual size of the American book industry. This revolutionary report represents the first time BISG and AAP have come together to produce a joint accounting of unit and dollar sales targeting print and digital formats as well as channel and category segmentation. The end result gave publishing, financial and media businesses a new and valuable tool for analyzing our rapidly evolving industry.

The statistics featured in BookStats were derived from a new data model developed in partnership with Management Practice, Inc. and supported by data collection from RR Bowker. The final report, due in July 2011, replaces the estimated annual industry data report published by AAP, as well as BISG's annual Book Industry TRENDS report.

An Open Meeting on E-Book Digital Rights Management, hosted by BISG and IDPF

Wednesday, May 25, 2011
Terrace 4A, Javits Center
4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Book Industry Study Group (BISG) and the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) invited members and other interested parties to an open, informal Digital Rights Management discussion during BookExpo America. During this 1-hour session, BISG and IDPF worked with attendees to explore options for improving consumer experience with multi-channel acquisition and cross-device consumption of e-books and other commercial digital publications.

To kick off the conversation, Bill McCoy (IDPF) and Angela Bole (BISG) provided a brief summary of the current market situation, including a compare/contrast of the following alternatives in play:

  • incorporation of anti-copying technology into the EPUB format standard;
  • development of lighter-weight "social DRM" solutions; and
  • cloud-based rights-locker solutions that are potentially format-neutral and tailored to use with online and browser-based Reading Systems
