PROGRAM OVERVIEW Imagine if a hardcover book hitting a retailer's store shelf displayed a different cover than it did when it left the printer. Although strange to picture, this mismatch of content and cover image can be a real problem for books published and sold digitally. Even as our industry moves digital, some things remain the same: the effectiveness of book publishing continues to rely extensively on consistent preparation and use of product metadata. Literally tens of thousands of publishers create metadata for an estimated 275,000 frontlist and two million or more backlist book titles. This metadata can then be modified, enhanced, corrected, or even disregarded by wholesalers, retailers, online booksellers, and others. The result is an industry wide game of "telephone," with original metadata often garbled by the time it reaches a consumer. Over the past three decades, the number of new and in-print titles has multiplied, increasing the importance of metadata in tracking content assets and improving the likelihood that they will be discovered. Some organizations have instituted programs to encourage publishers to maintain high-quality metadata, and BISG has worked to document best practices among trading partners. While these programs have been helpful in improving metadata quality, opportunities for closer collaboration between trading partners on the development and use of product metadata have never been greater. Be a part of the solution! PRESENTATION DESCRIPTIONS
WEBCAST 1 OF 3
A Research-Based Understanding of the Current Metadata Landscape:
Full Results from BISG's Metadata Research Project
Tues, June 12, 2012 from 1pm to 2pm Eastern
Presented by Brian O'Leary, Founder and Principal, Magellan Media

In January 2012, BISG commissioned a project to map the flow of product metadata across the publishing supply chain. Thirty interviews, supplemented by an industry survey of both the U.S. and Canadian markets, underpin the research effort. Completed in May, the research illustrates the critical metadata handoffs, documents how metadata is altered or discarded and identifies the points at which changes and revisions occur (or don't).
During this 60-minute session, Brian O'Leary of Magellan Media, BISG's partner on this project, presented complete findings from the research project, including an assessment of prevailing processes as well as recommendations that will help supply-chain partners maintain better or best practice and improve metadata effectiveness.

Understanding Metadata ROI:
Insight from Nielsen's White Paper, The Link Between Metadata and Sales
Tues, June 19, 2012 from 1pm to 2pm Eastern
Presented by Jonathan Nowell, President, Nielsen Book

Supplying sufficient and appropriate metadata has always been actively encouraged within the book industry, but until now the effect of supplying (or not supplying) this metadata has been poorly, if at all, measured. Being at the heart of the global book industry, Nielsen Book is uniquely positioned to provide an accounting of this measurement based on their intimate access to both bibliographic data supplied by publishers and sales data supplied by retailers. Combining these data sets, Nielsen has been able to assess the impact that supplying good quality, appropriate metadata has on sales.
During this 60-minute session, Jonathan Nowell, President of Nielsen Book, described results from a Nielsen White Paper on this topic entitled The Link Between Metadata and Sales.

Navigating the Transition from ONIX 2.1 to ONIX 3.0
Tues, June 26, 2012 from 1pm to 2pm Eastern
Presented by Graham Bell, Chief Data Architect, EDItEUR

The ONIX for Books trade metadata format is well-established across North America, Europe and -- increasingly -- the Asia-Pacific region. ONIX is a key enabler for the supply chain, and great ONIX metadata is the best way for a publisher to ensure its books are discoverable.
But most current implementations are of ONIX 2.1, a version of the standard that dates to 2003. A major revision -- ONIX 3.0 -- was released by EDItEUR in 2009. Building on the success of 2.1, it aims to align the standard with the latest developments in the global book supply chain, particularly the growth in importance of e-books, and ensures that ONIX continues to meet the needs of its stakeholders.
During this non-technical one hour session, Graham Bell described the key differences and improvements introduced with ONIX 3.0, the likely issues faced by would-be implementers, and the key business benefits that migrating to the latest standard brings.
