PROGRAM OVERVIEW The e-book revolution is well underway and digital publishing continues to grow at a staggering rate -- almost too fast to measure. How large is the e-book market in the U.S. and abroad? How quickly is it growing? Which e-books are selling best and at what price points? And what does it mean for your digital publishing business? To help answer these questions and more, and to provide a solid foundation of actionable data, the Book Industry Study Group and Digital Book World offered this three-part webcast series on all things e-books. From publisher sales and consumer behavior, to digital growth in emerging international markets, to understanding which digital content is selling best, Getting Grounded with E-Books: The Latest Statistics and What They Mean will help you navigate the turbulent waters of the publishing industry's digital transformation. PRESENTATION DESCRIPTIONS WEBCAST 1 OF 3 Measuring the North American E-Book Market By the Numbers RESCHEDULED: Fri, Nov 2, from 2pm to 3pm Eastern Presented by Len Vlahos, BISG, and Noah Genner, BookNetCanada CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD ONLY THIS WEBCAST. For the first time since the digital content revolution began, some publishers reported that e-book sales were slowing down. Yet, the proliferation of devices continued unabated, and new companies entered the digital space every day. In this session, the first in our three-part "Getting Grounded with E-Books" webcast series, we used data culled from multiple sources to take the mystery out of the digital marketplace. Looking at the landscape from the point of view of publishers' sales into the trade, as well as from consumer purchases and behavior, attendees learned which categories showed the strongest e-book growth, how multifunction tablets were competing with e-reading devices, how consumers were spending their discretionary time, and much more. WEBCAST 2 OF 3 E-Books in the Global Marketplace Tues, Nov 6, 2012 from 1pm to 2pm Eastern Moderated by Ed Nawotka, Publishing Perspectives, with presentations from Olivannan Gopalakrishnan, Emerald Publishers, Jo Henry, Bowker, and Sebastian Posth, Publisher and Consultant CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD ONLY THIS WEBCAST. As the US e-book market matured and growth slowed, international markets were the next best digital opportunity for publishing companies in the US and abroad. In this session, the second in our three-part "Getting Grounded with E-Books" webcast series, we looked at the international digital publishing landscape from 30,000 feet, as well as at specific markets in Europe, India, and beyond. Attendees learned about the growth of e-books outside of the US, how quickly markets abroad were adopting e-books, e-readers and tablet computers and which markets were most promising for expansion by US-based publishers. They left with a better understanding of digital publishing outside of the US and with a strong foundation to make business decisions about which markets to enter and how to best enter them. | DDD | PROGRAM SPEAKERS WEBCAST 1 ![]() Noah Genner BookNet Canada ![]() Len Vlahos Book Industry Study Group WEBCAST 2 ![]() Olivannan Gopalakrishnan Emerald Publishers ![]() Jo Henry Bowker Market Research ![]() Ed Nawotka Publishing Perspectives ![]() Sebastian Posth Publisher and Consultant WEBCAST 3 ![]() Jeremy Greenfield Digital Book World ![]() Len Vlahos Book Industry Study Group |

The widespread availability of digital publishing technologies led to a great increase in the number of e-books published, making it hard to get specific titles noticed and even harder to sell when so many e-books were available for free.
In this session, the third in our three-part "Getting Grounded with E-Books" webcast series, we looked at which e-books rose to the top of the sales charts across many different vendors and dissected how they got there. Attendees learned how pricing and promotion affects e-book sales, how an e-book becomes a best-seller, and which e-books sustain big sales over longer periods versus e-books that spike and disappear. They left with a better understanding of what makes an e-book best-seller and at what price points consumers really buy e-books.
