PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This program will explore two important topics related to "opening the book": 1) the network vs. container model of producing and distributing content and 2) Subcompact Publishing as a new way of developing next generation products.

Networked Books
It's true that e-books have transformed publishing, but e-books ("books under glass") are just the beginning.

The real disruption, according to Hugh McGuire, will come when we start to see networked books -- books whose content is part of the fabric of the open web, not separated from the web in closed containers (paper, PDFs, EPUB, and MOBI). The problem, of course, is the unknown business model of the "open book". Even so, unknown business models likely won't stop this shift: there is too much potential value for readers, and startup book publishers who think of their businesses in completely new ways. Hugh will explore why the networked book must necessarily start opening on the web, how it will happen, and a few publishing business models that will help it emerge.

Subcompact Publishing
Joshua Benton remarked, "The perception of the incoming disruptors is that they are low quality, and therefore not really worth paying attention to." Let's pay attention....

Coined by Craig Mod, Subcompact Publishing is a straightforward philosophy centered around understanding and respecting what readers need, then simplifying publishing processes to meet this need. Kickstarter, Wattpad, Tokyo Otaku Mode, and The Magazine are just some examples of companies changing the way books are written, read, distributed, and sold according to a Subcompact Publishing model. As Joshua Benton stated, it's easy to dismiss startup companies entering incumbent spaces. Even so, smart publishing executives know they should have their notebooks open and pay close attention. Craig will explain.
