BISAC Identification Committee Meeting: "FOCUS ON ISTC"
Tuesday, March 30, 20109:00 AM to 12:00 PM
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
BISG unveils their newest discussion paper, ISTC: A Work In Progress, with a hosted Identification Committee meeting on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in NYC.
The ISTC ( International Standard Text Code) has repeatedly been called the most important identifier since ISBN. It's a new ISO standard, published in 2009, which identifies an underlying textual 'work' independently of any specific manifestation. It provides a much needed mechanism for identifying an identical text that may be available in many seemingly different published works with different ISBNs. By doing so, it has the potential to provide better, more targeted online search and discoverability. That said, like ISBN, the ISTC's path to adoption has not been a straight one. Misunderstandings -- even controversy -- abound with regard to its implementation and its ability to solve key industry problems. For example:
- Is ISTC an effective tool for tracking sales activity for a single product available in multiple formats?
- Is there a well defined return on investment for a publisher in the application of ISTC?
- Who can register an ISTC and does registration imply ownership of the work?
To help answer these questions, BISG will host an open meeting on March 30, 2010 focusing exclusively on this important identifier and discussing the potential it offers the book industry.
Industry expert Michael Holdsworth has been invited to present findings from a soon-to-be-released BISG/BIC discussion paper titled ISTC: A Work In Process. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion featuring the following key stakeholders in the future use of ISTC:
- Andrew Weissberg, Vice President Identifier Services, R R Bowker
- Phil Madans, Director of Publishing Standards and Practices, Hachette Book Group
- Joe Gonnella, Vice President of Adult Trade Merchandising, Barnes and Noble
