ABOUT THIS WORKING GROUP
The Identification of E-Books Working Group is one or two sub-groups within BISAC's Identification Committee. The other being the ISTC Working Group.BISAC's Identification Committee monitors, reviews and develops best practices for the use of identifier standards in the book industry. It also contributes to the development of emerging identifier standards and the implementation of new ones.
BACKGROUND ON THIS MEETING'S AGENDA
In May 2010 the Identification of E-Books Working Group began a systematic review of the International ISBN Agency recommendations for the identification of e-books and digital content. This review resulted in the September 2010 hiring of Michael Cairns of Information Media Partners to conduct an objective, research-based study that would describe, define and make recommendations for the best case identification of e-books in the U.S. supply chain. The study was titled the Identification of E-Books Research Project.
BISG is now happy to announce the conclusion of this substantial research study and will share an overview of findings with members during this January 13, 2011 Identification of E-Books Working Group meeting. All BISG members are welcome to participate and can register by clicking the yellow "Register Now" button above.
The identification of e-books is a complex problem and has proved challenging for all involved. BISG believes the development of a long-term solution will prove equally challenging. That said, the successful development of this solution is paramount and will have profound implications for how digital content is produced, distributed, sold and tracked. Thus, BISG is committed to providing guidance that is fact-based, transparent in its derivation, broadly accepted and sustainable.
BISG expects the Identification of E-Books Research Project will become a key influencer of the consensus-driven process to develop BISG-endorsed best practices for the identification of e-books. This process will take place over several months of Identification of E-Books Working Group meetings to follow the January 13, 2011 kick-off. Final BISG-endorsed best practice recommendations will be shared with the International ISBN Agency in hopes they will influence the further development of this important standard.
