Presentation description:

The relative ease of publication enabled by advances in digital printing has opened the field for many self publishers and small independents. While the output of these publishers is sometimes dismissed as insignificant in the traditional landscape, there are indisputable success stories (e.g., Eragon, The Christmas Box). Perhaps more importantly, a larger number of independent publishers are achieving quiet success in niche subject areas not yet explored by major publishers.

In this webinar, Jamie Carter (Operations Manager, Publisher Alley) presented sales trends and other data related to the output of independent publishers in the Baker & Taylor wholesale channel. Popular subject areas were revealed, both by title count and units sold. In addition, Jamie discussed the market areas (retail, library, etc.) most receptive to independent publisher output. Finally, Florrie Binford-Kichler (President, Independent Book Publishers Association) described cases where she's witnessed indie pub success and described the most common paths to achievement among IBPA members.

Both traditional and independent publishers had much to take away from this session.
