Webcast program description:

The advent of smart phone applications that initiate action based on information encoded in bar code symbols has provided a wide array of new opportunities to inform and empower consumers. A "smart phone" is a cell or mobile phone that includes a built-in camera and has the ability to run application programs. Empowerment occurs when a consumer captures the image of a bar code symbol on an advertisement, promotional poster, or product. The application then retrieves encoded data from the symbol and takes some action based on that information, usually through the internet.

During this Webcast, described examples of applications for the general public that are in use in locations around the world, including some appearing in the United States, followed by applications developed by booksellers. We then reviewed general guidelines for implementing consumer empowerment. Application design considerations and bar code symbol selection, placement, and readability were covered. Examples of some more frequently appearing bar code symbols completed the presentation.
