TARA CATOGGE
Senior Vice President of Inbound Supply Chain, Levy Home Entertainment
Tara Catogge joined Levy Home Entertainment in 2006 and is currently the Senior Vice President of Inbound Supply Chain. Prior to joining Levy, she was the Executive Vice President, Sales and Merchandising for Advanced Marketing Services (AMS), working with the wholesale clubs. Prior to joining AMS, she was employed by Harcourt Brace, Inc. as the International Sales Director for the Academic Press book division. Tara holds a BA in Business Management, a BFA in Arts Management and an MBA from Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University (expected 2011).
BILL KASDORF
Vice President, Apex Content Solutions
Bill Kasdorf is General Editor of The Columbia Guide to Digital Publishing and Vice President of Apex Content Solutions, a leading supplier of consulting, data conversion, editorial, production, and content enhancement services to publishers and other organizations worldwide. Past President of the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP), Bill has led seminars and spoken widely for publishing industry organizations such as SSP, ALPSP, O’Reilly TOC, NISO, AAP, AAUP, STM, Seybold Seminars, and the Library of Congress. He currently serves on the IDPF Working Group updating the EPUB standard (and is coordinator of its Metadata Subgroup); the BISG Digital Standards Content Structure Working Group (and is chairing its Standards Survey subgroup); and the IDEAlliance working group developing the nextPub standard for delivering content to print, online, mobile, and tablet technologies.
JOHN KONCZAL
Worldwide Industry Executive, Sterling Commerce
John Konczal, Worldwide Industry Executive at Sterling Commerce, an IBM Company, sets the Sterling Commerce market and product strategy for positioning the Sterling Commerce selling, fulfillment and business-to-business integration solutions in the communications, media and entertainment industry. His specialty is the design and deployment of e-commerce, channel integration and order fulfillment solutions supporting customer-centric sales strategies in global communications and media environments.
SCOTT LUBECK
Executive Director, Book Industry Study Group
Scott Lubeck has more than thirty years of experience in publishing, entrepreneurship and innovative use of technology. He began his career in editorial at the University of Texas Press in 1977; he became president of Texas Monthly Press in 1983.
Scott has been at the forefront of many transformation initiatives in the publishing industry. As director of the National Academy Press in Washington, D.C. in 1989, he led pioneering work in digital print and Web publishing. In 1999 he joined the Perseus Books Group as vice president and managing director where he led the development of Perseus Print on Demand.
In 2001, Scott joined Harvard Business School Publishing in the newly created role of Chief Technology Officer to lead its strategic initiatives in digital publishing. In 2007 he joined NewsStand/LibreDigital as vice president and general manager and in 2008 joined Wolters Kluwer Health, Professional and Education as vice president of technology to lead its single-source publishing strategy. He is currently executive director of the Book Industry Study Group.
DAVID MARLIN
President and Co-Founder, MetaComet Systems
David Marlin co-founded the company that eventually became MetaComet® Systems in February 2000. Beyond his expertise at helping businesses solve their rights and royalties challenges, David is committed to enhancing the technological capabilities of the publishing world through his work as the founding co-chairman of the Book Industry Study Group’s (BISG) Digital Sales Reporting Committee. David currently serves on the BISG Governing Council and is the co-chair of the BISG Rights Committee, which many in the industry believe will provide the foundation for publishing’s future growth. He is a regular speaker and contributor to industry events and symposia.
Prior to founding MetaComet Systems, David spent three years as a technology consultant for publishers. Before that he spent several years managing large scale projects for American Express in New York. David earned both his MBA and BA from Columbia University in New York.
KEN MICHEALS
EVP & COO, Hachette Book Group
Ken Michaels joined Hachette Book Group (HBG) as EVP & COO in January 2009. In his role as COO, Ken runs all operational areas: Distribution, Facilities, Fulfillment, IT, Managing Editorial, Production, Strategic Publishing Operations and Distribution Sales and Fulfillment to other publishers (13 clients to date).
Prior to HBG, Ken was Senior VP of Global Business Process Management for the McGraw-Hill Companies reporting to the Chairman; before that role he spent twelve years at General Electric in a variety of senior roles, including General Manager of GE’s Capital Mortgage Origination businesses.
Ken holds a Bachelor’s degree in business administration, an MBA, and is a graduate of GE’s Financial Management Program.
HEATHER REID
Director of Data Systems and Services, Copyright Clearance Center
Heather Reid is Director of Data Systems and Services at Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), a leading provider of copyright licensing and compliance solutions. In this role, she leads the team responsible for maintaining CCC’s rights management database and plays a key role in strategic initiatives and projects focused on expanding CCC’s products and services. Heather is very active in the standards arena, serving on several Boards and Committees. She is on the Board of Directors of the National Information Standards Organization and is a member of the BISG Rights Committee. She has also been an active participant in the development of the ONIX for RROs and the ONIX-PL standards. Prior to working at CCC, Heather held a variety of positions with online content providers, academic libraries and IT management.
BRETT SANDUSKY
Director of Product Innovation, Kaplan Publishing
Brett Sandusky is currently Director of Product Innovation for Kaplan Publishing where he focuses on digital product development, eBook strategy, usability, mobile applications, and content integration across platforms. Formerly, he was Director of Marketing during which time he developed data-driven marketing strategies that capitalized on strategic use of metadata, Web 2.0 functionality, and direct-to-consumer outreach.
ANDREW SAVIKAS
CEO, Safari Books Online and VP, Digital Initiatives, O’Reilly Media
Andrew Savikas is the interim CEO at Safari Books Online, and is the VP of Digital Initiatives at O’Reilly Media. He’s also the Program Co-Chair for O’Reilly’s Tools of Change for Publishing conference, and is a regular contributor to the O’Reilly Radar blog on digital publishing issues.
Andrew leads the digital publishing and ebook program and strategy for O’Reilly Media, including both print and digital production of all O’Reilly books. He sits on several boards, including Safari Books Online, the Book Industry Study Group and the International Digital Publishing Forum, and is on advisory boards for Bookshare and the University of Michigan Press.
Andrew holds a B.S. in Media Studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and an MBA from Northeastern University in Boston. He speaks frequently on digital publishing and ebooks, and is also the author of “Word Hacks: Tips & Tools for Taming your Text”.
MIKE SHATZKIN
Founder & CEO, The Idea Logical Company
Mike Shatzkin is the Founder & CEO of The Idea Logical Company and a widely-acknowledged thought leader about digital change in the book publishing industry. In his nearly 50 years in publishing, he has played almost all the roles: bookseller, author, agent, production director, sales and marketing director, and, for the past 30 years, consultant. His insights about how the industry functions and how it accommodates digital change form the basis of all of the company’s consulting efforts.
Mike has organized conferences, spoken to industry groups, and worked with leading publishers, suppliers and trading partners across the globe. His blog, The Shatzkin Files, is one of the most closely-watched ongoing commentaries on digital change in trade publishing.
Mike has recently announced a new global conference initiative with partner Michael Cader, Publishers Launch Conferences, focused on helping publishing professionals worldwide navigate the digital transition. Working in conjunction with some of the world’s best-known publishing fairs and professional organizations, Publishers Launch Conferences expects to convene seven events in four cities in the next year.
MADI SOLOMON
Director of Content Standards, Pearson Plc
Madi Weland Solomon is Director of Content Standards for Pearson Plc, the international media company which owns brands such as The Financial Times, Penguin Books, and Pearson Education. She leads the development and management of Pearson content management and data standards to ensure the support of current and new product models. Prior to Pearson, she was the Corporate Taxonomist for The Walt Disney Company and a taxonomy and metadata consultant specializing in rich media. Her background is in the visual arts sector as the former Project Associate with the Getty Information Institute in Standards and Vocabularies, and Curatorial Assistant with The Broad Art Foundation. She has developed and implemented corporate strategies relating to global interoperability for large organizations using a cultural approach to change management and workflow transformation.
Madi is a member of the Book Industry Study Group’s (BISG) Rights Committee and Metadata Committee. Formerly, she was the Chair of the AMIA ‘s (Association for Moving Image Archivists) Digital Initiatives Metadata Sub-Committee, a member of the LOC ‘s (Library of Congress) Moving Image Collections Cataloging and Metadata Working Group, and a contributor to the ISAN Best Practices for Audiovisual Works. She holds a BFA from Boston University.
