ANGELA BOLE
Deputy Executive Director, Book Industry Study Group

Angela Bole was appointed Deputy Executive Director of the Book Industry Study Group (BISG) in March 2009, having previously served two years as Associate Director and two years as Marketing and Communications Manager. Working closely with members and non-members alike, she has been instrumental in furthering BISG’s mission of creating a more informed, empowered and efficient book industry supply chain for both physical and digital products.

Angela has English Literature and Gender Studies degrees from Indiana University Bloomington and a Masters Degree in Book Publishing from New York University. She is an active member of the Women’s Media Group, a New York-based nonprofit association of women who have achieved prominence in the many fields of media. She also serves as Treasurer on the International Digital Publishing Forum’s (IDPF’s) Board of Directors.


KYUSIK CHUNG
Vice President of Business Development, Goodreads

Kyusik Chung is the VP of Business Development at Goodreads, the world’s largest site for readers and book recommendations. In this role, he manages partnerships, strategy, and corporate communications. Prior to joining Goodreads, Kyusik was a co-founder and the CEO of Discovereads, which provided Netflix-like book recommendations based on your personal tastes. Goodreads acquired Discovereads in early 2011 because providing those recommendations to the Goodreads community made so much sense. Prior to founding Discovereads, Kyusik was a Product Manager at Zillow.com where he helped create the “Zestimate” valuation engine that predicts over 45 million individual home prices every day. Prior to Zillow, Kyusik was a Lead Program Manager at Expedia where he led the effort to define the hotel industry’s standardized XML schemas and data exchange protocols.


PETER COLLINGRIDGE
Founder, Bookseer

Peter Collingridge is a publishing entrepreneur whose work at the maverick edge of publishing began at UK independent publisher Canongate Books in 1997. He spearheaded the firm’s move into digital in 1998 by setting up and running their community website and pioneering the creation of digital marketing techniques for books. In 2005, he set up Apt Studio, a strategic design and marketing consultancy that advises publishers on digital technology and strategy, and which has been described as “The future of book marketing” and “behind the best booky stuff on the web”. From Pottermore to the Wylie Agency’s Odyssey Editions, Peter has produced over 25 digital projects for some of the biggest names in publishing, media, the arts and business. In 2008, Peter co-founded Enhanced Editions to drive innovation in publishing and to help shape the future of the book. His current project, Bookseer, is an analytics tool for publishers which demonstrates the impact of promotional activity in real-time.


CHARLES DUHIGG
Author, The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business

Charles Duhigg’s journalistic accomplishments have made him an in-demand speaker for organizations from the UCLA School of Management to The Johnson Foundation and the National Association of Science Teachers. He is a prize-winning investigative reporter for the business section of The New York Times, where he contributes to the newspaper and the Times Magazine. He has authored or contributed to The Reckoning (2008), which studied the causes and outcomes of the financial crisis, Toxic Waters (2009), about the worsening pollution in American waters and this year’s The iEconomy, examining Apple’s in manufacturing and overseas, and what it tells us about the American economy. His work has won many awards including the Pulitzer Prize (finalist, Public Service Medal), 2009, the George Polk Award, 2007, the Gerald Loeb Award, 2008 and the National Journalism Award, 2009.

In addition to his reporting for the Times, Charles Duhigg is a regular contributor to television and radio, including the Newshour with Jim Lehrer, Frontline, Dr. Oz and various programs on CNBC and NPR.

Before becoming a journalist, Mr. Duhigg worked in private equity and founded a health care company in his home state of New Mexico. He is a graduate of the Harvard Business School and Yale College.


JAKE FREIVALD
Vice President of Corporate Marketing, Information Builders

Jake Freivald is the Vice President of Corporate Marketing for Information Builders. In this position, Jake is responsible for marketing operations: branding, marketing communications, events, Web marketing, and direct marketing. Prior to this role, Jake was the Vice President of Marketing for iWay Software, where he developed and executed all of iWay Software’s marketing strategies. Jake joined Information Builders in 1999, as a product manager for the Data Warehouse division where he supported cross-platform product development and deployment. He also became marketing manager for the Data Warehouse product line in 1999.

During his career, Jake has held several managerial positions with Andersen Consulting and Prudential Life Insurance Company of America. He also served in the United States Marine Corps as a Signals Intelligence Officer at First Radio Battalion. He graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1991.


KYLE MARX
Vice President of Business Analytics, Readerlink Distribution Services, LLC

Kyle Marx is currently Vice President of Business Analytics at Readerlink Distribution Services, where he has worked since 2002. In this position, Kyle oversees the enterprise reporting, analytics and category management functions. His department is responsible for design, development and deployment of reporting applications throughout all business units of the enterprise. As such, he works closely with senior management to provide deep dive analytics across enterprise issues and initiatives that lead to corporate strategic decisions. Kyle is also responsible for the Business Intelligence roadmap, including partnership with IT to streamline data management and develop a data warehouse strategy. Kyle has Business degree from Monmouth College and Master of Science from Elmhurst College.


BRIAN O’LEARY
Founder and Principal, Magellan Media

A publishing veteran with 25 years of operational, management and consulting experience, Brian O’Leary is Founder and Principal of Magellan Media, a management consulting firm that works with publishers seeking support in content operations, benchmarking and financial analysis. With Hugh McGuire, Brian is currently serving as co-editor of “Book: A Futurists’ Manifesto”, currently being published in three parts by O’Reilly Media. Brian also blogs about a variety of issues related to book, magazine and association publishing on his firm’s web site, www.magellanmediapartners.com.

In addition to his consulting assignments, Brian is the author of a research report on the impact of free content and digital piracy on paid book sales, as well as the editor and primary contributor for a study of the use of XML in book publishing. Both reports were published by O’Reilly Media in 2009.

Before becoming a consultant in 1998, Brian served as Senior Vice President and Associate Publisher with Hammond Inc., an internationally recognized geographic reference publisher. Responsible for database development, editorial content, production, and operations, Brian restructured editorial operations to benefit from the firm’s prior technology investments.


LEN VLAHOS
Executive Director, Book Industry Study Group

Len Vlahos is the Executive Director of the Book Industry Study Group, a national not-for-profit trade association whose mission is to create a more informed, efficient, and empowered supply chain. Prior to joining BISG, Len spent nearly 20 years at the American Booksellers Association, where has served as ABA’s Communications Director, E-Commerce Director, Education Director, and most recently, Chief Operating Officer. Len has worked for Internet marketing pioneer Yoyodyne, and for Kratz & Co. public relations. Prior to joining ABA, he worked in independent, chain, and university bookstores. Len lives in Connecticut with his wife Kristen, and two sons, Charlie and Luke.
