BookDROP: Dropping The Infrastructure Costs Required For Search Inside

"Last week, with a "book search" spec due from BISG, I wondered aloud what the heck is BookDROP? BNC pointed me to the spec. I just read the brief. Now I get it. Web search really is an afterthought here -- BookDROP is a protocol(usage?) for showing excerpts and chapters online, specifically at retailers that aren't holding a data warehouse full of ebooks. It is a distributed version of Amazon's Search-Inside-the-Book Program. It is a marketing-play. And to answer my own question -- it doesn't look like Google was involved or consulted. This will be great for smaller retailers and libraries. And it will be great for publishers who previously sent a single copy of every book separately to every service that wanted one for scanning. . . ."
