PRESS RELEASE
BISG Announces Research Partner For Book Industry TRENDS 2009
New York, NY (October 14, 2008) -- The Book Industry Study Group, Inc. (BISG) today announced that Outsell, Inc. will be the research partner for the 2009 edition of its flagship publication, Book Industry TRENDS. Outsell, Inc. is a well-known market research firm specializing in the publishing and information industries and was selected for its unique combination of industry knowledge and proven analytical rigor.
In announcing the partnership, Michael Healy, Executive Director of BISG, said, "The appointment of Outsell marks the end of a year-long review of Book Industry TRENDS, a review in which we have consulted many leading industry figures about what they want to see going forward from this essential publication. Outsell will soon begin the process of contacting publishers to collect data. We appreciate everyone's cooperation in the data collection effort as we strive to produce the most accurate figures for the benefit of the whole industry."
For more than thirty years, the book industry has looked to BISG and TRENDS to provide comprehensive and accurate statistics on the size and growth of the U.S. book business. BISG will continue its tradition of providing the highest level of data collection, presentation and analysis, while at the same time offering a fresh and rigorous perspective on the statistical methodology and results by leveraging Outsell's considerable resources and expertise.
As part of the effort to continually improve the quality and quantity of our statistics, BISG has for the first time commissioned an industry-wide publisher survey to collect the best possible data. The survey, to be undertaken by Outsell in November, will be open to all publishers, and BISG strongly encourages the participation of its members and all other interested parties, as it will be crucial to the success of Book Industry TRENDS 2009. More details and a link to the survey will be provided at a later date.
Book Industry TRENDS 2009 will still provide all of the vital information the industry has come to expect and rely upon. Using numerous charts and graphs, the publication will feature trend lines for dollar and unit sales through the various sales channels and in the major segments of the book business, including adult and juvenile trade, professional, religious, scholarly, elhi, and college. In addition, the 2009 edition will feature statistics on the growing number of electronic publications.
