Book Industry Study Group Announces New Policy Committee To Respond To Key Industry Issues

For the past 26 years the Book Industry Study Group (BISG) has successfully identified and examined issues that affect the business of publishing. In a new approach to this ongoing process, BISG is establishing a dedicated team of executives to address pressing industry concerns. The new "Policy Committee" will be led by BISG Board member Kevin Spall, (RR Donnelley).

"BISG has always taken a leadership position by establishing and maintaining standards as well as providing research for the book industry. This is the next logical step, one that will allow our members, who represent every sector of the industry, to come together and turn troubling issues into opportunities," says Jeff Abraham, Executive Director of BISG.

Meetings will be held in New York City and are open to BISG members from across the publishing industry. Some of the more immediate issues to be addressed include the upcoming changes to book product identifiers (ISBN-13, EAN/UCC-13) as well as technology opportunities such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).

Committee Chair Kevin Spall will reach out to industry executives to encourage participation from all sectors of the publishing value chain. Publishers, booksellers, suppliers and others interested in participating in key industry developments should contact Kevin at policy_chair@bisg.org.

Kevin's goal is to engage a cross section of the industry for this committee. "In today's environment, we need to move quickly, but still have clear and broad industry agreement on our recommendations."
