Book Industry Study Group on the Move

Book Industry Study Group announces a change in Executive Directors. Frank Daly, who has been Executive Director since Spring 2001 has decided to move on to new opportunities and Jeff Abraham has assumed the responsibilities effective August 1, 2002. Jeff Abraham's publishing background and experience will bring seasoned management skills and business development capabilities to the organization. "We are excited about leveraging Jeff's past accomplishments and look forward to him managing the many new programs we will launch this season, " said Charles Benante, Chairman of BISG.


Book Industry Study Group has completed the 24th Edition of Book Industry Trends, and established August 1, 2002 as the official publication date. All BISG members receive copies as a benefit of membership; non-members have the opportunity to purchase this valuable management tool. Book Industry Trends 2002: Covering the Years 1996-2006, prepared for the Book Industry Study Group by Fordham University Graduate School of Business Administration highlights that domestic consumer expenditures on all books is expected to reach $36.4 billion by 2006.


In addition the 2001 Consumer Research Study on Book Purchasing, Prepared by Ipsos Book Trends, for the Book Industry Study Group, the American Booksellers Association and Vista International will be available to members in August and available for purchase by non-members in September. BISG is also looking into the feasibility of releasing a study on the Used Book Market. The study, if conducted, will be prepared by Ipsos-NPD, the organization that prepares the Consumer Research Study on Book Purchasing.


For industry members more focused on technology issues, BISG is putting the finishing touches on an all day ONIX training program scheduled for mid-September that is being coordinated by the organization and New York University Center for Publishing. This training program is designed to provide and overview of ONIX for managers as well as instruction targeted at those individuals who will be creating ONIX records. This program will be held several times during the upcoming year.


Over the past year, BISG has completed all necessary steps for the introduction of the Book Industry Study Group Foundation, which will sponsor research projects, conferences, workshops, training seminars and other educational programs that will benefit the book industry. Current initiatives of the Book Industry Study Group Foundation include a conference on deciphering industry statistics and a 2003 study on the reading habits of different segments of the U.S. population.


At the request of many of it members BISG, has reactivated the Distribution Executives Interest Group. As one of their first projects, this committee will look at the vendor guides created by many retailers, wholesalers and others to determine if a common suggested core of requirements can be developed.
