ONIX For Books: The ONIX for Books Product Information Message is the international standard for representing and communicating book industry product information in electronic form.

Developed and maintained by EDItEUR jointly with Book Industry Communication (UK) and the Book Industry Study Group (US), and with user groups in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden and the Republic of Korea.

EDItEUR announced in April 2009 the release of ONIX 3.0, a major new version of the ONIX for Books standard and the first since 2001 that is not backwards-compatible with its predecessors.

It is important that senders and receivers of ONIX feeds should have a realistic expectation of implementation timescales. Feedback to the recent meeting of the ONIX for Books International Steering Committee suggested that the major receivers of ONIX feeds expect to be “live” with the new release by early 2010. It seems reasonable that both senders and receivers should aim to implement ONIX 3.0 by the end of 2009.

ONIX 2.0 was published in 2001, and 2.1 in 2004. ONIX 3.0 is the first release in eight years which is not fully backwards-compatible. EDItEUR will continue to support ONIX 2.n until further notice, although they strongly encourage all users to adopt 3.0 sooner rather than later.

Latest General Release: Release 3.0
Release 3.0 is a major new version of the ONIX for Books standard, the first since 2001 that is not backwards-compatible with its predecessors.  This extensive revision of the format has had two key drivers: the need to improve the handling of digital products, and the recognition that the price of maintaining backwards-compatibility has been the increasing number of ‘deprecated’ elements that have had to be maintained – and supported by ONIX receivers – even though they are no longer recommended for use.

At the same time, the opportunity has been taken to introduce important improvements in other areas, although there are many data element groups where little or no change has been considered necessary.  You can follow the link below for a fuller summary; or read the Introduction to ONIX for Books 3.0 which is available on the downloads page.

A package of detailed documentation, schema definition and code lists is now available for downloading.  There will be additions to the package from time to time during the coming weeks and months, and some items may be revised and extended.  However, the schema structure is now finalized.  Any changes, apart from corrections, will be backwards-compatible.  The release of any new or revised material will be announced through the ONIX for Books implementation listserv.
