POL-1201: Endorsement of EPUB 3

This Policy Statement outlines BISG's endorsement of EPUB 3 as the format of choice when representing, packaging, and encoding structured and semantically enhanced Web content.

Reviewed and approved by BISG's Board of Directors, this Policy Statement addresses the critical need for the global book publishing industry to rally around a single standard for the creation of digital content in order to impede recent instances of fragmentation beginning to seep into the supply chain.

Some of the people and organizations indicating specific support of
EPUB 3 and BISG's POL-1201 include:

GARTH CONBOY
Software Engineering Manager, Google

"Google remains an active contributor to the development of the EPUB 3 standard. The standard is making steady progress toward broad acceptance, thanks in part to BISG's concerted efforts. As EPUB 3 approaches global adoption, we expect publishers, authors and readers alike will benefit from the increased fidelity, richness and interactivity of forthcoming enhanced content."
GEORGE KERSCHER
Secretary General, DAISY Consortium

"The DAISY Consortium strongly endorses the EPUB 3 standard for the distribution of accessible publications. EPUB 3 has been developed from the ground up to be fully accessible. We recommend following the "Accessible EPUB 3" guidelines, available at no cost from http://www.oreillymedia.com or from the DAISY website at http://www.daisy.org/forums/17952. Using these guidelines with your EPUB 3 content will ensure that persons with disabilities will be able to read published materials at the same time and at the same price as everybody else."
BILL McCOY
Executive Director, IDPF

"The International Digital Publishing Forum warmly welcomes the endorsement of EPUB 3 by BISG. BISG-sponsored initiatives such as the EPUB 3 Support Grid have been very helpful during the initial EPUB 3 roll-out, and BISG's endorsement and promotion should further accelerate adoption. IDPF looks forward to continued close collaboration between other organizations to advance interoperable, accessible open standards, and reduce friction in the supply chain for digital publishing."
LIISA McCLOY-KELLEY
VP, Director of E-Book Production Strategy & Operations, Random House, Inc.

"Random House, Inc. has long been a strong supporter of EPUB as our preferred e-book distribution format. We are excited to see action underway toward wide adoption in the marketplace of the EPUB 3 standard, and all of the functionality it enables, as we work to create great digital-publishing experiences for our authors and their books."
ANDREW SAVIKAS
CEO, Safari Books Online

"Safari Books Online strongly endorses EPUB as our preferred distribution and delivery format. We're committed to extending that support to EPUB 3, particularly in new products and services that can showcase the enhanced design, multimedia, and interactivity capabilities of the EPUB 3 standard."
JAMES LICHTENBERG
President, Lightspeed LLC

"During this time of confusing and significant change in publishing, the creation of a standard for the expression of digital content is critical for the successful evolution of the industry. Equally important, however, is the understanding that we're still only at the beginning. There will, of necessity, be changes in the EPUB standard going forward, even as new technologies and new customer behavior emerge. Wide adoption of EPUB 3 will provide important insight into how best to evolve the standard in order to create new ways of meeting the needs of authors and consumers."
