This intensive training course, delivered in three 4-1/2 hour sessions across consecutive days, introduces the ONIX standard and the essentials of producing, managing, and disseminating book metadata. It mixes the background and theory of metadata with real-world practice and guidance in an approachable but authoritative way. Registrants will be provided with all the vital information to understand the basics of ONIX and how it is used in the book industry.

The course is suitable for beginners with no knowledge of ONIX, although it is also of value to those who are already familiar with ONIX. It is aimed at staff with management responsibility for product metadata, either in editorial, IT, marketing or production within a publisher, or in similar roles within distribution and retailing. It is not highly technical, but software developers seeking to understand ONIX would benefit greatly from this course. This course used to be called simply "ONIX Essentials" and took place over two sessions. The expanded course includes content that used to be covered in ONIX Advanced. Additional content has been also been added to ONIX Advanced, which remains a two-day course.

The course content aims to cover ONIX 3.0 in a comprehensive way, and covers both print and digital products.

  • Introduction: Explanation of what ONIX is, with typical use cases; a brief history of ONIX and its governance; discussion of the different versions of ONIX (2.1 vs 3.0); its commercial benefits; differences from 2.1 and advantages of 3.0; available documentation and tools.
  • More detail: Introduction to XML syntax; importance of semantics and controlled vocabularies (codelists); high-level structure and design of ONIX; functional granularity, language independence, semantic interoperability; data feeds, best practice and service level expectations.
  • Key data elements: Record reference; Product identifiers and Product form; Contributors and XHTML encoding of rich text; Titles, sets, series and Collections; Subject coding and keywords; Audience coding, Descriptive text and other collateral material; Chapter-specific Metadata, Imprint and Publisher; Publication date and Sales embargos; Territorial sales rights; Related works and products; Simple and complex markets, Supply details and pricing, Special coding for e-books, audiobooks; licensing and open access.
