Staff

The day-to-day operations of BISG are run by a two-person team. Our Executive Director is Brian O'Leary and our Operations Manager is Jonathan Fiedler. We also rely on the volunteers of our Committees and our Board of Directors to help us continue to provide the services needed to ensure BISG supports our members.

As Executive Director, Brian helps ensure that BISG disseminates information, creates and implements standards, and conducts research to benefit the book publishing supply chain.

Before being named to this role in 2016, he was principal of Magellan Media Consulting, which helped publishers improve how they create, manage and distribute content. In that role, Brian wrote extensively about issues affecting the publishing industry. He also co-edited Book: A Futurist's Manifesto (O'Reilly Media, 2012) with Hugh McGuire.

Brian served as SVP with Hammond Inc. and oversaw production and distribution operations at several Time Inc. magazines. He joined Time Inc. after earning an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and also holds an A.B. in chemistry from Harvard College.

Brian tries to dedicate his spare time to gardening and building model rockets and model railroads. His favorite author is Thomas Wolfe (not Tom Wolfe — an entirely different kettle of fish).

As Operations Manager, Jonathan supports the work of BISG’s five committees, plans and markets webinars and events, and helps ensure that BISG continues to benefit the entire publishing supply chain.

Prior to joining BISG in June 2020, he held multiple positions at Columbia University Press, moving from executive support to acquisitions editorial, and finally to sales operations. After an early career in law and finance, Jonathan is thrilled to have found a life working in and around publishing.

He studied history at Hamilton College, and although his bookshelf holds many biographies, he reads largely literary fiction. He loves discovering new writers, but will immediately buy the latest release by Rebecca Makkai, Ann Patchett, and Paul Yoon, among others. When he’s not reading, Jonathan loves to knit.
