Thema for the U.S. Market: What Publishers & Others Should Know

You know about BISAC. It has been the standard in the North American market for categorizing books by subject for over 25 years. But what do you know about Thema? First established in 2013, Thema is a multilingual subject category scheme, currently available in over twenty languages and used worldwide. The standard is managed by EDItEUR, which also manages ONIX and other standards, through a number of national interest groups, including BISG.
Although BISAC is likely to remain the standard for the North American market, publishers and others should know about Thema and how it functions. Publishers who sell books globally are likely already familiar with the standard and are providing Thema codes for books sold in other markets. In fact, BISG provides members with a BISAC to Thema mapping tool. Still, there is value in understanding more about the Thema standard and how it functions.
