Works in ONIX
A "Coffee Break" Webinar: Presenting useful information in just 30 minutes.
Join Graham Bell of EDItEUR to learn about how recent updates to ONIX have made it easier to describe relationships between different works.
What is a work? It’s a distinct creation from which multiple products can be manifested. A hardback, paperback, and ebook can all be manifestations of the same work. A work can also be translated, abridged, and adapted to create different derived works from which other new products can be manifested.
Until recently, ONIX could link a product to its parent work, and to a “grandparent” work – from which the parent was derived – but it could not say how the parent was derived from the grandparent. New additions to code list 164 make describing these kinds of more detailed relationships possible. By identifying the work that’s manifested in a particular product, you can easily find all products that have the same content. This creates better metadata and improves discoverability.
