BISG Welcomes Infernal Moose as Its Newest Member

The Book Industry Study Group is pleased to welcome Infernal Moose, an independent publishing company and developer of the all-in-one publishing platform Familiar, as a new member.

As BISG continues to broaden engagement across all segments of the publishing ecosystem—including independent publishers and technology innovators—Infernal Moose’s membership brings a valuable dual perspective. As both a publisher and a software developer serving small and medium-sized presses, the company operates at the intersection of creative production and publishing operations.

Infernal Moose’s primary offering, Familiar, is designed to simplify the behind-the-scenes work of running a publishing company. With a current focus on royalty calculations, the platform helps publishers manage complex royalty structures, track multi-format sales, and ensure accurate, transparent contributor payments—an increasingly important function as publishing models diversify and grow more sophisticated.

“Joining BISG gives us the opportunity to connect with the organizations shaping the future of the publishing industry,” said Jake Keuhlen, co-founder of Infernal Moose. “As a team that both publishes new titles and builds tools for independent publishers, we want to make sure the standards and workflows we support reflect the real needs of the entire industry. Our goal is to help more great stories get told, through our own direct work and through supporting publishers of all sizes.”

Infernal Moose has expressed interest in participating in BISG’s standing committees, including those focused on rights and workflow. Their engagement reflects a commitment to aligning Familiar’s tools with industry standards and best practices, from ONIX implementation to accessibility considerations and rights management.

BISG Executive Director Brian O’Leary noted, “Independent publishers and the technology partners who support them play a critical role in the health and resilience of the publishing industry. Companies like Infernal Moose bring practical, hands-on insight into how standards and workflows function in day-to-day operations. Their perspective will help inform ongoing conversations across our committees and strengthen the work we do together.”

BISG looks forward to collaborating with Infernal Moose and supporting their efforts to streamline publishing operations while contributing to a more efficient, transparent, and standards-aligned industry.
